Across our projects, Médecins Sans Frontières continues to see the urgent need for better access to mental health care and essential medicines, especially in low-resource and emergency settings.
The treatment gap for severe mental health conditions remains as high as 90%. This report notes that “mhGAP was implemented in 96 countries in 2024”. However, in many contexts where MSF works, “implementation” still means training alone. Without continued supervision and access to medicines, training does not close the treatment gap.
MSF supports the wider dissemination of WHO QualityRights Initiative.
MSF witnesses the lack of availability and affordability of medicines for mental health conditions, especially oral and long-acting antipsychotics.
People living with mental health conditions must have access to quality care, including appropriate medicines and psychosocial interventions.
