Public submission on the GAVI Alliance Draft Vaccine Supply and Procurement Strategy for the period 2011-2015

In July 2011, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) and Oxfam International jointly responded to the GAVI Alliance's public consultation on its draft Supply and Procurement Strategy.  The draft strategy outlines how GAVI plans to shape vaccine markets and lower prices, with the implicit understanding that lower prices mean more children can be immunized with the vaccines they need.  In this response, MSF and Oxfam recognise the strategy has improved on earlier iterations, but re-emphasise the importance of shaping the market through competition whenever possible.  They also stress that GAVI needs to consult extensively with its partners to define target products for GAVI countries, and use its market power to incentivise development of adapted vaccines that meet the specific needs of low-resource settings.
