Speaker: Dr Unni Karunakaram, MSF International President
"It’s very encouraging to see the US government wanting to turn the latest HIV/AIDS science into policies that will save lives while beginning to reverse the epidemic. Now is the time for bold action in order to get ahead of the wave of new HIV infections. In several countries where we work, we are seeing governments that are ready to act on the new science in order to turn back the toll the virus has taken on their people and their communities. If the US and other governments ramp up their investment in HIV treatment now, we know that millions of lives will be saved and millions more new infections will be averted."
- Dr Unni Karunakaram, MSF International President, in reaction to today’s speech by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the U.S. Government’s new vision for “turning the tide on HIV/AIDS.” New scientific evidence shows that treatment is also a form of prevention, as it reduces the risk of transmission of HIV from one person to another by 96 percent.
