MSF Calls for Emergency Donor Conference for Global Fund

Speaker: Dr Tido von Schoen-Angerer, Executive Director, Médecins Sans Frontières, Access Campaign

"HIV treatment today reaches one in two people who need it, which is critical progress, but we need to ramp up the speed of treatment scale-up for HIV as well as TB, the main killer of people with HIV. With the main funding body for HIV, TB and malaria programmes now out of cash, there is a serious crisis. It's like a car going full speed has suddenly run out of gas. It is simply unacceptable that there is currently no plan to support countries for treatment scale-up until 2014, especially at a time when we know that HIV treatment not only saves lives but is a critical way to prevent the spread of the virus and where countries finally are ready to scale up treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis.

The Board of the Global Fund will have failed if they don't get back in the drivers' seat, hold an emergency donor conference and mobilise the money for a new funding window within the next 200 days."
