Make It Happen Campaign Update 10
In December 2010, MSF sent pharmaceutical company Gilead a letter encouraging them to put their patents for vital AIDS medicines into the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP). On January 5, 2011 MSF received a reply from Gilead and are encouraged to hear they've started formal negotiations with the Medicines Patent Pool.
This first step could ultimately lead to licensing agreements with the MPP for AIDS medicines. However, the terms of the deal between Gilead and the Medicines Patent Pool will be crucial in determining how much of an impact it will have on expanding access to life-saving affordable medicines for people living with HIV in the developing world.
