A unique opportunity to address the problem of access to effective, affordable medicines by re-examining priorities in drug research and development was made available at the 2004 Mexico City Ministerial Summit on Health Research. This issue examines health R&D, a new approach to developing drugs for neglected diseases, fighting TB in a HIV setting and the lack of HIV drugs for children are all addressed.
